You’ve heard the advice before: Build your personal brand, grow your social media following and think about monetization. If you are new to the world of bloggers and online influencers, this can be very confusing. After all, how do you even begin to think about monetization when you first start a blog? How do you build your brand if the primary focus should be on making content and not on marketing yourself? How do you grow your social media following without coming across as creepy or desperate? And how many blog posts should you write in order to make money from them? The truth is that no blogger just hops into things without a plan. Everyone has their own strategy for how they want their brand to develop and how they will go about it. But even with all of that in mind, there are some simple tips that can help anyone monetize their blog sooner rather than later.
Know Your Audience
Your first step in monetizing your blog is to know your audience. If you don’t know who your audience is and you don’t know what they want, you’ll have a hard time figuring out how to reach them and provide them with something they will want. When you know your audience, you can tailor your content and your ad placement to meet their needs. You can write in a way that appeals to them and appeals to the problems they have. Best of all, when you know your audience, it is easier to figure out where your ideal customers are hanging out online. This is important because it makes it easier to begin marketing yourself and your blog. Knowing your audience also gives you a better idea of which social media platforms you should use to reach them. It helps you decide what times of day you should post and what kind of content to post.
Develop A Niche
One of the first decisions you will have to make is what your niche is. While this may seem like a no-brainer, it is worth noting that your niche doesn’t have to be specific. You don’t have to be the go-to source for information about a single type of plant or a specific type of car. You can be more general and still succeed. You may want to focus on gardening or cooking. Decide On Ad Formats You’ll Use
Part of your research into the most successful bloggers in your niche will include looking at the ad formats they are using. If you are using affiliate marketing to monetize your blog, you will likely want to use some type of ad to generate revenue from your links. While you can use a simple banner ad or a text-based link, you will probably see better results from using something like a pop-over or a pop-under ad. These are still simple to implement but are less likely to annoy your readers. You should also consider using an ad in the side bar of your blog. Some ads can be very intrusive to the reader, so be careful about what you choose.
Set A Blogging Schedule
Once you know your audience, know your niche and have decided on the ad formats you will use, you can set a blogging schedule. While you can still write whenever you like, setting a blogging schedule will help you reach your audience and draw in readers. When setting your schedule, consider when your readers are most likely to be online. Are they early risers? Night owls? Are they parents with young children? Once you know their general availability, you can then decide your own blogging schedule. You will probably want to post at least a couple of times a week, but you don’t want to over-saturate your readers. You also don’t want to make it so you are posting when no one is online.
Make Samples Of Your Content
Once you have been writing for a while and have a few posts under your belt, it is time to start thinking about the types of samples you want to create. You can create samples in a number of ways, and each method can lead to increased earnings. You can create samples of your written posts and post them to your website. You can create audio versions of your written posts and put them on a podcast. You can create video versions of your written posts and put them on YouTube.
